Summary:  Conceptualizes, develops, and coordinates MetroParks Volunteer Program, including recruiting, training, and supervising volunteers to leverage and coordinate available resources.   Identifies and matches the appropriate quantity and quality of volunteers to necessary tasks and/or projects.  Assists in offsetting operational costs by providing volunteer resources.  Utilizes strong computer, social media, interpersonal, and collaborative skills.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities – Essential Functions:

  • Regularly reviews and remains familiar with MetroParks staffing, programming, natural resources, and operational needs to find and coordinate meaningful volunteer experiences. Measures, records, and reports volunteer program achievements.
  • Manages the volunteer program in a manner that encourages interest, attendance, and retention of quality volunteers.
  • Develops volunteer program goals and policies for review and/or adoption.
  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams internally and externally to achieve volunteer program goals. Maintains a professional, cooperative working relationship with other staff members, volunteers, outside agencies, organizations, sponsors, partners, and collaborators.
  • For the purpose of recruitment, conducts research to identify and target individual volunteers or groups of potential volunteers. Also recruits new and returning volunteers through a variety of methods, including but not limited to advertisements, online tools, social media, attending job/volunteer fairs, newsletters, etc.
  • Provides regularly scheduled volunteer orientation sessions and comprehensive training sessions for volunteers designed to welcome and build a relationship with new volunteers as they get settled into their new role. Creates training and program materials.
  • Coordinates background checks for volunteers with MetroParks’ Police as necessary.
  • Ensures that the appropriate number of volunteers, equipment, tools, and materials are secured and available to support each project. Assists with volunteer tasks in the field and office as assigned.
  • Accurately collects and records MetroParks volunteer program hours and maintains volunteer and project database(s), as well as video and photographic records. Gathers other necessary data from program participants and paid staff members to use in reports.
  • Creates and keeps accurate financial records, program budget, time& work records.
  • Makes public presentations regarding MetroParks Volunteer Program and attends meetings and community gatherings to represent MetroParks as assigned.
  • Coordinates and assists with special assignments, projects, and special events as determined by supervisor.
  • Reports and/or resolves with management and administrative personnel any irregularities and/or violations of MetroParks policies and procedures, including, but not limited to procurement, cash handling, other policies and/or regulations in a timely fashion.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Detail oriented with the ability to work independently, to organize and coordinate, and to prioritize and self-initiate completion of assigned work with high standards and sense of pride of ownership in projects assigned.
  • Ability to manage and complete multiple projects effectively and appropriately.
  • Ability to operate personal computers and common office equipment, as well as utilize e-mail, word processing, spreadsheet software and social media platforms.
  • Ability to maintain confidentially on sensitive issues and non-public records.
  • Ability to maintain a professional, cooperative working relationship with other staff members, volunteers and the staff of other agencies.

 

Required Education and Experience:

  • An Associate Degree or higher from an accredited college or university and a minimum of three years’ relevant job experience in a closely-related field and/or position.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly and effectively convey information both orally and in written form to groups of different ages, special populations, interest groups and backgrounds in an interesting and effective manner.
  • Good character with no history of serious criminal activity (felony convictions). Ability to exemplify the highest ethical standards in professional and personal conduct.
  • A valid driver’s license with an acceptable motor vehicle record allowing insurability by the MetroParks’ current vehicle insurance carrier under existing coverage provisions at the time of employment and thereafter. Candidates for employment may not have more than 4 total points (or equivalent penalty) issued by a recognized licensing authority for driving-related violations on their driving record at the time of employment and thereafter.

 

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with some course work in business administration, marketing, human resources, administration, public relations, or environmental studies or closely related field of study.
  • An understanding of and a demonstrated personal commitment to natural resource conservation
  • Practical experience with managing volunteers in some capacity either on the job or as a volunteer.

 

Work Environment & Schedule:

This is a full-time position that must maintain a flexible work schedule which provides availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to extreme outside weather conditions including temperature, humidity, wet conditions, fumes, or airborne particles.

 

Physical Demands:

General good health and mobility as necessary to perform the functions of the position. While performing the duties of this job, the Manager of Volunteer Resources is regularly required to stay in a stationary position and to traverse in indoor and outdoor environments.  This employee may occasionally move up to 25 pounds.  This employee must be able to complete tasks in a noisy environment and be able to apply established protocols in a timely manner.
