Description

Under the direction of the Street Superintendent.   Responsible for the safety, as well as, maintaining the fleet vehicles and equipment within the city.

Examples of Duties:
  • Performs difficult skilled work maintaining and repairing a variety of automotive, light and heavy trucks and construction equipment
  • Troubleshoots problems
  • Performs scheduled/unscheduled maintenance service
  • Performs mig welding, oxygen/acetylene torching, plasma cutting and soldering
  • Installs lighting and 2-way radio equipment; makes repairs to equipment hydraulic systems
  • Performs clerical tasks (e.g., receives/opens mail, answers phone, maintains inventory of repair parts, maintains files and retrieves information, orders parts, and supplies
  • Maintains fleet maintenance database on computer, maintains preventive maintenance schedule for all vehicles and equipment
  • Maintains required licenses and/or certificates
  • Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to essential functions
  • Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance
  • Participates in the snow removal operations using front-end loader and single axle dump truck
  • Works overtime as required to continue essential City services
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
Typical Qualifications:
  • High School diploma, trade, or vocational school
  • Three (3) to five (5) years’ previous experience in automotive mechanics; which includes experience troubleshooting and diagnosing operational problems
  • Valid Ohio Class A Commercial Driver’s license, with air brakes and tanker endorsements or must obtain one within one year of employment
  • ASE certified in Brakes, Steering and Suspension, and a minimum of two other areas within one year of employment
Supplemental Information:

Knowledge of:

  • Considerable knowledge of methods, tools, and equipment used in repair and maintenance of automotive passenger cars, trucks, construction, and maintenance equipment
  • Necessary safety precautions

Skill in:

  • Use of/operation of tools and machinery used in automotive repair work (e.g., tire changer and balancer, impact wrenches, diagnostic equipment, personal computer)

Ability to:

  • Detect by inspection worn or broken parts
  • Adapt available tools and parts to specific repair problems
  • Perform heavy manual labor
  • Understand and follow specific oral instructions
  • Carry out detailed but basic written or oral instructions
  • Count, addition, and subtraction; Read and record figures accurately
  • Recognize safety warnings
  • Complete routine forms
  • Cooperate with co-workers on group projects
  • Answers routine telephone inquiries

Working Conditions:

  • Heavy: lift, push, pull 50 to 100 pounds occasionally; 20 to 50 pounds frequently
  • Works in the vicinity of floor or wall openings, elevated platforms, and/or runways
  • Ascends and/or descends ladders, stairs, or scaffolds
  • Works in an area in which the means of egress is or can be obstructed
  • Works on and around powered platforms and/or vehicle mounted platforms (e.g., manlifts)
  • Is exposed to environmental conditions which may result in injury from fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and/or poorly ventilated work areas.
  • Is exposed to possible injury from extremely noisy conditions above 85db. (e.g., air hammer, air compressor, large trucks, chain saws, cutoff saws, post hole diggers)
  • Is exposed to possible injury from hazardous gases, chemicals, flammables, or air contaminants
  • Is exposed to possible injury due to unclean or unsanitary conditions
  • Is exposed to possible injury as a result of electrical shock
  • Is exposed to possible injury as a result of working with moving mechanical parts of equipment or machines
  • Has exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy weather conditions
  • Has exposure to heavy traffic flow
