The classified, non-exempt, full time Fleet Maintenance Supervisor will work along side the Fleet Maintenance Technician(s) and will be responsible for the overall function of the Mechanics division.
- Performs difficult skilled work maintaining and repairing a variety of automotive, light and heavy trucks and construction equipment
- Troubleshoots problems
- Performs scheduled/unscheduled maintenance service; performs mig welding, oxygen/acetylene torching, plasma cutting and soldering
- Installs lighting and 2-way radio equipment; makes repairs to equipment hydraulic systems
- Schedules daily work. Schedules/assigns personnel and equipment to work force and particular jobs.
- Provides guidance and training of workforce; inspects work to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Performs clerical tasks (e.g., receives/opens mail, answers phone, maintains inventory of repair parts, maintains files and retrieves information, orders parts, and supplies, maintains fleet maintenance database on computer, maintains preventive maintenance schedule for all vehicles and equipment).
- Participate in the preparation and administration of assigned budget.
- Maintains required licenses and/or certificates.
- Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to essential functions.
- Participates in snow removal operations using front-end loader and single axle dump truck; works overtime as required to continue essential city services.
- Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
- Remains informed of current developments and procedures pertinent to duties; participates in staff development activities and service; develop and review procedures; attends staff meeting and supervisory conferences.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Must stay current with the changes in automotive industry.

Minimum Qualifications:
- High School diploma, trade, or vocational school
- Four (4) to ten (10) years’ previous experience in automotive mechanics which includes experience in troubleshooting and diagnosing operational problems
- Two (2) years of supervisory management.
- Valid Ohio Class A Commercial Driver’s license, with air brakes and tanker endorsements or must obtain one within one year of employment.
- ASE certified in Brakes, Steering and Suspension, and a minimum of two other areas.
Knowledge of:
- Supervises staff (e.g., approves leave requests, recommends discipline, conducts performance evaluations, interviews candidates, recommends applicants for hire, assign work); Supervisory principles and practices
- Considerable knowledge in methods, tools, and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of automotive passenger cars, trucks, construction, and maintenance equipment
- Necessary safety precautions
- Office practices and procedures
- English grammar and composition.
Skill in:
- Assigning and supervising the work of others
- Training employees in proper techniques
- Use and operation of tools and machinery (e.g., drills, grinders) used in automotive repair work (e.g., tire changer and balancer, diagnostic equipment)
- Personal computer, office equipment (e.g., fax, copier, calculator, use of fleet maintenance software); gather, collage, and classify information about data and equipment
Ability to:
- Detect by inspection, worn or broken parts
- Adapt available tools and parts to specific repair problems
- Recognize unusual or threatening conditions and take appropriate action
- Perform heavy manual labor
- Understand and follow specific oral instructions; carry out detailed but basic written or oral instructions
- Do basic addition and subtraction; read and record figures accurately
- Recognize safety warnings
- Complete routine forms
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, vendors and the public
- Answer routine telephone inquiries
