Job Description:

Responsible for setting up and operating laser, press brake, shear, and lathe that use computer programming to control tools and machines. Ensure the machines run smoothly and efficiently to produce accurate and high-quality parts according to specifications. The duties include loading materials, setting up the machine, monitoring the production process, and performing quality checks.

The candidate’s role will also encompass mechanical assembly tasks, including the responsibility for assembling mechanical components and systems according to specifications in a manufacturing environment. Able to work with various mechanics tools and equipment to construct products, or subassemblies, ensuring they meet quality standards. Will need to be able to read and interpret blueprints, use hand and power tools, and perform quality checks.

Key Responsibilities of a CNC Operator and Mechanical Assembler:

  • Setting up and operating CNC machines:

This includes loading materials, selecting appropriate tools, and inputting the correct program parameters.

  • Monitoring machine operation:

CNC operators observe the machines during production to ensure they are functioning correctly and to make adjustments as needed.  Needs computer literacy to load part programs and to make adjustments to programs.

  • Assembly:

Assembling mechanical components and systems using hand and power tools, following blueprints, schematics, and assembly instructions.

  • Performing quality checks:

This involves inspecting finished parts for accuracy and adherence to specifications, often using measuring tools like calipers and gauges.  Conducting quality checks on assembled products to ensure they meet specifications and industry standards.

  • Material Handling:

Preparing for assembly by gathering parts, subassemblies, tools, and materials using hand trucks, hoists, and powered fork lifts.

  • Maintenance:

Maintaining a clean and safe work area, as well as maintaining tools and equipment.

  • Reading and interpreting blueprints and technical drawings:

CNC operators need to understand the specifications of the parts they are producing.

  • Troubleshooting:

Identifying and resolving assembly-related issues, sometimes in collaboration with engineering teams.

  • Documentation:

Keeping accurate records of assembly processes, materials used, and any issues encountered.

  • Following safety procedures:

Adhering to safety protocols to prevent accidents and injuries.

  • Documenting work:

Keeping records of production runs, machine maintenance, and any issues encountered.

  • Continuous Improvement:

Participating in efforts to improve assembly efficiency and product quality.

 

Skills and Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent:
  • Experience:Prior mechanical assembly and machine operation experience and aptitude is preferred.
  • Understanding CNC machine operation, tooling, and programming. Previous experience on any relatable CNC equipment desired, and ability to be trained on employer’s specific equipment.
  • Blueprint Reading:Ability to understand and interpret technical drawings and schematics.
  • Tool Proficiency:Experience using a variety of hand and power tools, such as wrenches, screwdrivers, and power drills, electric hoists.
  • Measuring Instruments:Familiarity with measuring tools like calipers and micrometers.
  • Mechanical Aptitude:A strong understanding of mechanical principles and the ability to troubleshoot mechanical issues.
  • Problem-solving skills: Ability to identify and resolve issues during production.
  • Attention to detail: Ensuring accuracy and quality in the finished products.
  • Mathematical skills: Ability to perform calculations related to measurements and dimensions.
  • Communication skills: Ability to communicate effectively with other team members.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Following Instructions: Ability to understand and follow detailed written and verbal instructions.

Additional Considerations:

  • Physical Requirements: Mechanical assembly often involves standing for extended periods and performing repetitive tasks. Will work in a typical shop environment with machine noise and will be required to wear typical PPE.
  • Safety: Adherence to safety procedures and regulations is crucial.
  • Attendance:  This is a full-time, 40 hour-a-week position and regular reliable attendance is a must.
  • Varying duties:  This position will often vary in responsibilities throughout the work week and candidate is expected to be flexible in what work they are assigned and be willing to fill-in and fit-in to meet changing production needs.
